Do I have a hearing problem?
Our hearing is like our eyesight - we rarely notice the small changes. The easiest way to assess yourself is to ask:
- Do you find it difficult to follow conversations in a large group of people?
- Do you think other people mumble or speak softly?
- Do you find it difficult to cope with background noise?
- Do people complain that your TV or radio is too loud?
- Do you hear better with one ear than the other?
- Do family or friends tell you that they have to repeat phrases for you?
- Do you avoid certain activities or social events because it is too difficult to hear?
If you answered yes to three or more of these then it is wise to book a hearing test. It is always good to monitor your hearing and a regular hearing test can identify problems at an earlier occasion.
Back to top ^Do I have to ask my doctor to refer me?
You don’t need a doctor’s referral for your optician or dentist and you don’t need one to come to us. You could get an appointment within a week at Lotus Hearing Aid Centre whereas an NHS assessment may take weeks, months and in some cases, years to book a test with a further six month wait for a hearing aid without the choice of models.
Back to top ^Do I need to bring anything or anyone?
You don’t need a special letter or documents as our full assessment will look at why you are having problems. We explain everything clearly and concisely and we don’t rush over any aspect of the test or the results. However, we find that bringing a friend or relative with you is often useful as they will be able to help you decide on your hearing aid or may have additional questions you never thought of.
Back to top ^How long will the hearing test take?
Your initial appointment should take around an hour and this includes the hearing test. We like to get to know you so we can understand your lifestyle and any concerns you may have.
We use the latest audiology equipment for the assessment, which takes place in a sound proof booth. We will be able to discuss your results straight away and make sure you understand every aspect before discussing your options.
Back to top ^Will it hurt?
The test is a series of sounds and is not invasive at all. We will make sure you are relaxed and know what to expect every step of the way. If you require a hearing aid, we will take an impression of your ear but this is not painful and is similar to a dental impression.
Back to top ^Will I have to have a hearing aid?
Not everyone will need a hearing aid but previous clients that have experienced hearing problems say they are amazed at how much better their lives are after a fitting. We take time to understand the type of hearing aid that is right for you and you will be able to choose from a wide range of models from the most respected manufacturers in the industry.
Like your eyes and your teeth, your hearing should be regularly checked to monitor levels. Similarly if you have a hearing aid we offer annual checkups so we can make sure the hearing aid is working optimally.
Back to top ^How long does it take to get a hearing aid?
Once you have decided on the right hearing aid for you, we send off impressions of your ears to the manufacturer. This means that your hearing aid will be specifically designed and crafted just for you. This usually takes between a few days and two weeks depending on the type of hearing aid. We will then book another appointment for a full fitting and training. This means that you could have a whole new life within just 14 days.
Back to top ^How will I know how my new hearing aid works?
We make sure you understand every aspect of your new hearing aid before you leave us. We take the time to run though all its functions and set the appropriate levels. We want you to get the most out of your hearing aid and that is why we provide a full training session to make sure you are happy.
Back to top ^What is included in the cost?
We understand that hearing aids are a big commitment and that is why we offer a full service. The cost of your hearing aids will include the hearing test and initial assessment as well as fitting and after care services. We also advise on insurance cover that will give you extra peace of mind.
